Ashley Wagner. Again. We might of thought she had a fair chance of winning the title, but did anyone think she’d be near-perfect and put out a score close to 150? I suppose it’s questionable whether the tech panel gave her passes an international tech panel might not, but even taking that into consideration, this is a statement win, and perhaps the sweetest moment her fans have enjoyed in a long time. Now we just have to hope she can actually do it again in Shanghai, as least well enough to medal if the chips fall in the right way. And there was a podium selfie also, because of course there was.
Maia & Alex Shibutani, Madison Hubbell & Zacharay Donohue, and Kaitlin Hawayek & Jean-Luc Baker. I hate that there’s no room for the last to go to Worlds. Although Chock & Bates might have impressed me too, but sorry, their making the musical choice they did is still too classless for that. I also hate that they won their first title with it, and will probably win their first World medal with it too.
Haven Denney & Brandon Frazier, and Tarah Kayne & Danny O’Shea. The second the most. And okay, Scimeca & Knierim’s quad twist was cool too, but they were a wee bit overscored.
